NEW YORK, NY – The Manhattan Jaspers Baseball team (9-12, 3-6 MAAC) erupted from the plate against the Lions of Columbia University (4-13, 2-1 Ivy League) for a 17-9 win inside Robertson Field at Satow Stadium on Wednesday evening.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Jaspers started their quest for their first victory over Columbia since 2018, rather quickly, with a first-inning bases-clearing triple from Hunter Sute.
Then, Sute, on third, scored off a passed ball with Trevor Hansen at the plate.
Manhattan wasn’t done in the top of the second with Jeremy Sosa scoring from third off a Colin Basehore ground out to put the Jaspers ahead 5-0.
In the top of the third inning with the bases occupied on second and third, Hayden Jung-Goldberg bunted back to the pitcher for the successful safety squeeze to put the team’s sixth run on the board.
The Lions were able to post their second run before the Green and White again responded with five runs in the fourth, highlighted by Josiah Brown’s two-run blast to right field, along with Justin Best and Hunter Sute’s back-to-back doubles.
In the top of the sixth inning with the bases loaded once more, Guriyandel Salva brought home two more runs before bringing a third across the plate due to an error by the opposing second baseman.
The bats didn’t stop for the Jaspers, with Salva launching his first home run of the season to center field for the team’s 15th run.
Finally, Manhattan didn’t stop in the top of the ninth, with another two runs added courtesy of Hunter Sute’s base knock through the right side to drive home Vincent Samuel.
With the bases loaded one final time, Jung-Goldberg sent an infield single to second to bring home Dylan Mayer for the team’s 17th and final run.

QUOTES FROM THE JASPERS
Head Coach Steven Rosen: “First off, a ton of respect for their program, players, and their coaching staff, who do a tremendous job. We appreciate their help with our program in the fall, as Clover Stadium finalized its turf. It was an awesome team win today – and especially great to see some different guys get in and have so much success. Looch [Andrew Castelluccio] and Brown set the tone early and allowed our bats to get to work. 30+ quality at-bats in one game is pretty impressive.”
