The Queens Public Library announced that its Flushing branch, located at 41-17 Main St. in Flushing, will be temporarily closed starting Monday, April 27, so that two critical safety improvements can be completed.

Safety improvements that will be completed by the New York City Department of Design and Construction include replacing the fire alarm system’s smoke dampers and adding a new fuel tank for the building’s generator. The closure is expected to last approximately five weeks, with a reopening in early June.

As part of the fire alarm system work, the library’s auditorium will be closing on Monday, March 30. Additionally, while the building is closed, maintenance work will be performed on the service elevator.

“These important upgrades will take place simultaneously to minimize disruption to the public,” Queens Public Library President and CEO Dennis M. Walcott said. “Flushing Library, constructed nearly 30 years ago, is one of the busiest in our system. The time has come to make these necessary improvements, and we recognize the impact this temporary closure will have on our customers and staff. We are grateful for their patience as the Library and DDC work to ensure the building remains safe and fully functional.”

Frequent visitors of the Flushing Library can go to other Queens Public Library locations until it reopens. This includes the McGoldrick Library at 155-06 Roosevelt Ave., the Mitchell-Linden Library at 31-32 Union St. and the East Flushing Library at 196-36 Northern Blvd.
