Warmer weather is right around the corner, and with it comes the return of boating season across Orange County waterways. We are reminding residents that under New York State law, all operators of motorized vessels are required to carry a valid boating safety certificate while operating. This requirement now applies to ALL operators, regardless of age or experience level, as part of the state’s effort to improve safety and reduce accidents on the water.
Boating safety education is essential for safe boat operation. To help residents prepare for a safe and enjoyable season, the Orange County Sheriff’s Office has added several new dates to its schedule for the free New York State Boating Safety Course.
Classes will be offered on the following dates:
Tuesday & Wednesday April 7th & 8th 4pm – 8pm
Sunday, April 12th, 2026, 8 am – 4 pm
Sunday, May 17th, 8 am – 4 pm Wednesday & Thursday
May 20th & 21st 4pm – 8pm
Sunday, June 7th, 8 am – 4 pm
Sunday, July 12th 8 am – 4 pm
These classes are open to the public, but registration is required. They will take place at the Orange County Emergency Services Center. Each course is taught by two highly trained Deputy Sheriff Marine Operators who are approved by New York State. They bring real-world experience and practical knowledge to the classroom.
Participants will learn about boating laws, required safety equipment, navigation rules, and how to handle emergency situations on the water. Upon successful completion, attendees will receive the certification required to legally operate a motorized vessel in New York State.
Spaces may fill quickly, so early registration is encouraged.
