Cops are looking for man who smeared an “unknown substance” on the door of a historic Brooklyn mosque in what’s being investigated as a possible hate crime, cops said Saturday.
The unidentified man approached the Islamic Mission of America Daoud Mosque at State and Clinton Sts. in Brooklyn Heights around 4:30 a.m. on March 9, and threw pieces of a religious book on the place’s front step.
He then left, only to return and smear the mysterious matter on the door before fleeing on foot heading east on State St.
There were no injuries.
No one has been arrested. The NYPD Hate Crime Task Force is investigating the incident.
The suspect wore a black skullcap, black face mask, red sweatshirt, red sweatpants and white-and-black sneakers.
Based in a converted townhouse, the house of worship was founded around 100 years ago to serve Sunni Muslims, says its web site, which describes the Islamic Mission of America as “one of the most influential American Islamic organizations to have ever existed.”
