Niagara University, N.Y. — Niagara baseball earned the series victory over Iona with a 3-2 victory Sunday afternoon in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference action at John P. Bobo Field.
The Purple Eagles improved to 9-12 overall and 5-4 in conference play, while the Gaels fell to 7-14, 5-6 MAAC.
After two scoreless innings, Niagara broke through with a three run bottom of the third to take an early lead. Jason Green led off with a single to right field followed by a run-scoring double down the left-field line from Curtis McKay to put the Purple Eagles on the board.
Shawn Cameron grounded out to shortstop, moving McKay to third, before Hammill singled to center to drive in the second run. Konings then singled through the right side, and Kozar plated the third run with a single through the left side.
Iona answered immediately in the fourth, cutting within one when Costello drew a walk and Overton hit a two-run home run to left field.Â
The rest of the game was a pitcher’s battle which saw Purple Eagles starter Gage Wheaton throw six innings, punching out three batters.
Nathan Harb came in during the seventh and got out of a no out bases loaded situation to keep the Niagara lead intact.
Harb threw 0.2 innings of the eighth before Andrew Damiani came on to close out the game and record his sixth save of the season.
