Queens residents and leaders gathered along Liberty Avenue in Richmond Hill on Sunday, March 29, to celebrate the 38th Annual Phagwah Parade, which is in recognition of the Hindu festival of Holi.

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, the first South Asian Mayor in the City’s history, was the Grand Marshall for this year’s festivities, wherein attendees threw powder at each other to symbolize the blossoming of spring and the tidings of joy and renewal.

“I want to thank, first and foremost, the organizers of this parade. Let’s hear it for them, because we’re talking about a parade that has existed for years, but has been organized and brought about thanks to the hard work of so many,” Mamdani said. “Thank you to everyone who is here, because today is a celebration of color, of joy, of life.”

Beginning at Liberty Avenue and 133rd Street, the parade ran west on Liberty Avenue, north on 124th Street, east on 97th Avenue and south to 125th Street. Several floats were featured during the parade, with some featuring dancing participants and Caribbean music.

The parade culminated at Phil Rizzuto Park, where attendees enjoyed live music, cultural performances and family-friendly activities.
