FLATIRON, Manhattan (PIX11) — A well-liked security guard was shot multiple times during a fight near an affordable-housing building in the Flatiron District on Monday afternoon, officials said.
The 49-year-old man was shot several times in the body near East 28th Street and Madison Avenue near Madison Square Park just before 12:30 p.m., according to the NYPD.

Officers tried to aid the victim at the scene before he was taken to the hospital for treatment, police said.
Authorities said the victim was fighting with another man on the sidewalk before shots rang out near The Prince George building, which was converted from a premier hotel to a building that houses formerly homeless adults and low-income tenants.
“I heard the shots. They were really old. I heard the guy screaming. There were already a couple of people helping him,” said Gabe Monroe, who works on the block.

A resident in a nearby building told PIX11 News the victim is a security guard at the supportive housing building owned by Breaking Ground.
“He wasn’t rude like some of the security guards in this building. If a tenant in the building shot him, I could expect that because there are a lot of tenants in this building who are unstable,” the resident, Zachariah, said.
It was unclear what prompted the shooting. There have been no arrests.
“Breaking Ground is deeply saddened by the incident involving one of our security guards near The Prince George earlier today. Our thoughts are with them and their loved ones, and the safety of our tenants, staff, and community is our top priority,” said a spokesperson for Breaking Ground.
