STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Nearly 250 young people from after-school programs across the borough enjoyed a day of fun at the Staten Island Zoo earlier this month.

On Thursday, Oct. 2, Staten Island elementary students from 18 after-school sites were invited to the zoo in West Brighton as part of the Comprehensive After School System of New York City, or COMPASS — the largest after-school program of its kind in the nation.

COMPASS was recently expanded this school year and the next two school years to serve another 20,000 students. It currently serves more than 110,000 students in kindergarten through eighth grade at over 900 schools and community centers in New York City.
