Manhattan High track and field took care of business in the season opener, sweeping both team titles at the Topeka West Invitational on Friday.
The girls finished first with 271 points, while the boys followed with a first-place finish of their own, scoring 190 points while battling windy conditions and early-season rust.
Manhattan’s girls, coming off a Class 6A state runner-up finish last season, showed depth across every event group in the season opener.
Jorryn Hall led the way in the throws, winning both the shot put and javelin while adding a runner-up finish in the discus. Joss Hall placed third in shot put and sixth in discus, while Audrey Pencis added a fifth-place finish in shot.
In the jumps, Alexis Peabody claimed the high jump title, with Sophia Peabody finishing second and Zariah Johnson fourth. Alexis Peabody also added a third-place finish in the long jump, while Johnson placed fourth. Samaria Robinson won the triple jump as the Indians swept the podium, with Avery Ingram in second and Callie Porter in third.
On the track, Demya Gill captured the 100-meter title, with Sarah Oberreuter placing third. Zoey McKinley added a runner-up finish in the 400.
Manhattan swept the distance events, with Gabrielle Converse winning both the 800 and 1600, while Isla Spreer added a win in the 3200. Zara Koehn placed third in the 1600 and fourth in the 800. Valeria Villoria added a third-place finish in the 320, and Talia Tindall placed second in the 800.
The Indians also found success in the relays, as the 4×400 and 4×800 teams both claimed first-place finishes. The 4×100 relay team placed second.
On the boys’ side, Evan Middleton led the field events with a win in the shot put and third-place discus. Ean Staley placed sixth in shot put, while Connor Scott added an eighth-place finish.
In the jumps, Brady Durtschi took second in the triple jump, with Derrick Amos finishing third. Amos also placed fourth in the high jump, while Logan Herzog (second) and Lucas Strawn (third) added podium finishes. Strawn also won the pole vault, with Ethan McGee finishing second.
On the track, Joseph Mortensen won the 100 meters, followed by Damien Gonzales in second. Gonzales added a runner-up finish in the 200. Peyton Overturf placed second in the 800, while Jaxon Wheeler led the distance group with a third-place finish in the 3200.
The 4×800 relay team closed out the meet with a win, while the 4×100 relay team placed second.
Manhattan returns to action on Friday at Junction City.
