Earlier this month, the Mamdani administration rolled out a new set of tools for homeowners to make extra income by adding accessory dwelling units to their property.
An ADU is a small building on the same lot as your main house, like a backyard cottage. But it can also be attached to your property in the form of a basement apartment or garage conversion.
The city has a new guide called “ADU For You,” which features a library of pre-approved designs, feasibility and cost-estimating tools.
The city is also reopening applications for a program that will provide financial and technical support for eligible homeowners looking to add an ADU to their property.
The city’s Department of Buildings Commissioner Ahmed Tigani joined NY1 political anchor Errol Louis on “Inside City Hall” to discuss more.
