Severe weather brought hail and heavy rain to parts of Western New York on Tuesday, including in Cattaraugus and Allegany counties.

The Gowanda Central School District temporarily sheltered in place on Tuesday for all district buildings due to extreme weather conditions. Gowanda says the district will be closed on Wednesday.

“This closure allows our facilities team to address weather-related damage and ensures that our buildings are fully inspected and safe for the return of our students and staff. Please note that all after-school and evening activities for tomorrow are also cancelled to keep everyone off the roads and out of harm’s way,” the district said on Facebook.

There are reports of hail damage and possible wind damage to vehicles with dents and shattered windshields.

A Tornado Warning was issued for northeastern Cattaraugus County and northwestern Allegany County until 4:15 p.m.

The Allegany County Sheriff’s Office issued a travel advisory, warning drivers to use extreme caution. It says dangerous conditions are expected to continue through Tuesday night and into the next several days.
