The southwest corner of Hoboken will finally be getting a supermarket it has longed for as Dumbo Market will be crossing the Hudson River and launching their first New Jersey location.

Local developer The Taurasi Group announced they have signed a lease with the Brooklyn-based grocer to bring the market to Southend Lofts, a new mixed-use condominium building at 38 Jackson Street. The 12,700-square-foot store will occupy a prime space within the property’s 50,000-square-foot ground-level retail and commercial program, which is anchored by a light-filled public atrium with seating.

The location marks Dumbo Market’s first New Jersey store (the similar Urban Market Hoboken location is managed by family members) and will introduce its distinctive New York City experience. Expected to open in approximately 12 months, the market will offer a curated selection of globally sourced cheeses, fresh organic produce, hot foods prepared by an on-site Chef, salads, sushi, flowers, and more.

Besides the groceries, Dumbo Market will also feature a full-service liquor store. The Hoboken spot will make a big leap for the business, which was founded six years ago in Brooklyn’s Dumbo neighborhood and has since expanded to Boerum Hill, with additional locations planned in Long Island City and Manhattan’s Upper East Side by the end of this year.

“We are a family-run business, and connecting with our customers is at the heart of everything we do,” said Asad Mujalli, whose father, Imad, and uncle, Mohammad, own Dumbo Market. “We want to know every single customer’s name, like a mom-and-pop store from back in the day. I love this location. We’re going to bring a different concept to Hoboken, and we think people will really appreciate it.”

Charter Realty, who represent Southend Loft’s ownership and curates the retail program, were similarly excited about the market’s arrival.

“Retail and residential work hand in hand at Southend Lofts — the energy of new shops, restaurants, and services enhances livability, while the growing residential base fuels retail success,” said Daniel Zelson, Principal of Charter Realty. “Dumbo Market will fill a long-standing gap in the neighborhood and set the standard for quality and convenience.”

Originally built in 1893 as the Davis Baking Powder and My-T-Fine Pudding factory, the Southend Lofts property was restored and expanded with new wings rising nine stories. The building sits across from Southwest Park, which was recently expanded in size over the summer.
