MIDWOOD, Brooklyn (WABC) — A 44-year-old woman was fatally struck by an ambulance as she crossed the street early Thursday morning in Midwood.
Police have now identified the pedestrian as Cherry Cayetano Sobel, 44, a resident of Brooklyn.
The driver, a 42-year-old man, has not been identified.
The ambulance, operated by Maimonides Medical Center, was making a left turn from Avenue O onto Ocean Avenue when it hit Cayetano Sobel.
The driver kept going.
Police in Brooklyn are looking to speak with the driver.
Cayetano Sobel was taken to Maimonides Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead.
Detectives believe that the driver likely did not realize the vehicle had hit a person.
Maimonides Medical Center identified and suspended the driver, pending the outcome of the investigation.
“The Maimonides family is devastated by this tragic loss. Our EMT staff who were involved in the incident have been suspended pending the outcome of the NYPD’s investigation. Our heart goes out to the victim’s family and friends,” Maimonides Medical Center said in a statement.
No charges have been filed yet.
