BROOKLYN, N.Y. (PIX11) — A frightening scene in Sheepshead Bay, Brooklyn, after an SUV slammed into a residential building Saturday afternoon, sending emergency crews racing to the site.

It happened around 1:30 p.m. near East 13th Street and Avenue X, when an Audi SUV with a student driver sticker in the back window barreled into the first floor of an apartment building with people still inside.

Emmanuel Furman, who lives in the apartment that was hit, says his 4-year-old son was just feet away from being struck.

“My first concern was obviously my son,” Furman said. “My son was on the bed, and I just wanted to make sure he was okay more than anything else.”

The crash left a gaping hole in the family’s living room wall and forced firefighters to evacuate the building as a safety precaution. City engineers were called in to assess whether the structure was stable.

One person suffered minor injuries and was taken to the hospital for treatment.

Neighbors say the moment of impact shook the entire building.

“I was in the kitchen, was shaken like an earthquake, ya know,” said one resident who didn’t want to show her face on camera.

“It’s disappointing of course for the people who live in that apartment and for the people who did that, everybody is shocked, but luckily nobody injured,” she added.

Furman says he’s been told his family will have to move out for several months while repairs are made.

“They told us we have to move out because the fundamental building basically broke down, so I guess we have to live somewhere three to six months, and it’s very unfortunate,” he said.

The Red Cross was on scene and says it will help his family find temporary housing.

Despite losing their home, Furman says he’s grateful the outcome wasn’t worse.

“Thank God he was fine, but it’s very, very unfortunate.”

Police say the cause of the crash remains under investigation.
