Award-winning journalist Irin Carmon, coauthor of the bestseller “Notorious RBG,” joins Rebecca Traister for a conversation on Carmon’s powerful new book, “Unbearable: What We Don’t Talk About When We Talk About Pregnancy in America.” The book explores the failures of America’s reproductive system through the stories of five women navigating their pregnancies.
From Carmon’s own experience being eight months pregnant when the Supreme Court overturned abortion rights to her years reporting on gender and justice, the book offers a sweeping look at the cost of reproductive care in our country. This event, hosted by Books Are Magic, will have a book signing following the talk. The event will also be live streamed.
“This disquieting exposé from New York Magazine reporter Carmon (“Notorious RBG”) reveals the inadequacy of maternal healthcare in the U.S. Partially inspired by her own pregnancy during the Supreme Court’s overturning of Roe v. Wade, the author highlights the ‘neglect, infantilization, and criminalization’ endured by patients within the healthcare system via the experiences of four women who are either pregnant, postpartum, or trying to conceive, as well as an ob-gyn who seeks to open a birth center in post-Roe Alabama.” — Publisher’s Weekly
“When the beloved indie bookstore BookCourt in Cobble Hill announced its closing in December 2016, the neighborhood (and beyond) was crushed. Famous writers and neighbors filled social media with mourning. The very same day, however, came a ray of hope: bestselling novelist Emma Straub, who lives nearby, wrote on her blog: ‘A neighborhood without an independent bookstore is a body without a heart. And so we’re building a new heart.’ On May 1, 2017, Straub and her husband opened their store, Books Are Magic, which has fully lived up to their promise.” — The Bridge BK
