While it’s something that we deal with every year, and like clockwork, it arrives with a bang, but even after all these years, we’re never really ready for it. But the first snow of the 2025/26 winter season has hit the Empire State, and people all over New York are giving Mother Nature a huge side eye.
While kids across New York are getting ready to go door-to-door on Halloween and Beggars’ Night, road crews across the state are making sure they have all the things they need to keep us safe on the road this winter.
The New York State Department of Transportation got some practice the other day as the first real measurable snow hit the Empire State the other day and now I guess that winter’s arrival is getting real.
Snow Has Started Falling In New York State
State road crews were out on New York Route 431 in Essex County, otherwise known as Veterans Memorial Highway, the other day doing something we don’t want to deal with yet: plowing snow.
Now that the snow has started to fall, we guess this means it’s best that we start preparing for the white stuff to run our lives for the next 6 months. Even though we don’t want to think about it, let’s start to prepare for winter now (if you haven’t started already).
Do you remember the salt shortages we had last year? Don’t wait until you actually need to start stocking up on salt, shovels, and winter gear like snow brushes and other supplies.

Places like Buffalo and Rochester are due for their first snowfall, as the average days of first snow are around October 24th.
