Loew’s Jersey Theatre unveiled new architectural renderings and a redesigned logo, offering a first look at its transformation into a year-round, multi-purpose cultural destination in Jersey City’s Journal Square.
The project marks a major milestone in the restoration of the historic 1929 “Wonder Theatre.” The effort is a partnership between the Jersey City Redevelopment Agency, the State of New Jersey/New Jersey Economic Development Authority and Harris Blitzer Sports & Entertainment
The venue is expected to reopen this fall.

“The Loew’s Jersey Theatre is a symbol of Jersey City’s past and future,” Jersey City Mayor James Solomon said in the April 6 announcement. “For decades, Journal Square has been the heart of our city, home to working families, immigrants, and dreamers, and this restoration is a testament to their resilience and to the neighborhood they never gave up on.”
Upon reopening, the venue is expected to host approximately 150 events annually, including live music, comedy, touring productions, sporting events and community programming. The long-awaited project will return the theater to active use after more than 40 years, with a flexible capacity ranging from roughly 2,600 to 4,000 attendees.

“These renderings offer a glimpse into the quality of the restoration and an insight into what our patrons, promoters, partners, performers, and neighbors will see when they first step into this very special venue,” said Bruce Wheeler, general manager of Loew’s Jersey Theatre.
Meet the team
The project team includes:
OTJ Architects – leading the full architectural rehabilitation of the historic structure, including both interior and exterior restoration and the redesign of the orchestra level to allow for flexible seating configurations
Phelps Construction Group – overseeing construction and the broader rehabilitation effort, encompassing upgrades to mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems as well as back-of-house and loading areas
Off the Record Collective, led by Kerri Silvestri – directing the experiential interior design for artist and backstage spaces, blending the theatre’s historic character with modern functionality.
The redesign emphasizes immersive, modern performance capabilities, including advanced lighting, projection and sound systems, along with configurable seating to accommodate a wide range of events. The broader rehabilitation preserves key architectural elements while modernizing the venue to support concerts, film, live performances and hybrid events.

The project also introduces a new visual identity, with a logo inspired by the theater’s 1920s origins and ornate interior design, reinforcing its blend of historic character and modern functionality.
“The Friends of Loews fought to bring this iconic Wonder Theatre back to life – proving that communities thrive when properly invested in,” Solomon said. “I’m proud to see the JCRA, the State of New Jersey, and Harris Blitzer Sports & Entertainment come together to make this vision a reality, and I can’t wait for Jersey City residents to walk through those doors.”
The restoration is expected to play a central role in the ongoing revitalization of Journal Square, positioning Loew’s Jersey Theatre as a premier destination for arts, entertainment and community events in the region.
