MANHATTAN, Kan. (WIBW) – The City of Manhattan is conducting its annual Spring Cleanup Week.
It provides free curbside pickup of tree limbs and other yard waste throughout residential neighborhoods.
City of Manhattan Public Works Operation Dan Tyson says the cleanup helps the community by keeping debris out of streets and storm drains.
“It just gives the opportunity for people that don’t have the means to take stuff out to the transfer station, we can do that for them,” he said.
Tyson said the effort can also help protect the city’s stormwater system.
“Basically to keep stuff from washing down the streets into the stormwater system, it helps with that,” he said. “And it’s just good for trees and everything, glass to be pruned up.”
Crews will visit every neighborhood throughout the week. Residents are asked to stack yard waste on the curb before 7 a.m. on the day of pickup.
Tyson said the city is using multiple departments to cover the cleanup route.
“We use every bit of our street maintenance crew, plus our storm water maintenance crew and some helpful parks employees also,” he said. “So it’s a big operation, we’ve got five different crews running around town right now.”
Tyson also reminded residents that pickup depends on accessibility and the type of material set out.
“If it’s too far away we won’t get it,” he said. “If there’s cars parked in front of it blocking it we can’t pick it up. Construction debris, any kind of trash, anything like that we won’t pick that up either.”
