Manhattan detectives are investigating the death of a man who was found unconscious inside a NYCHA building stairwell early on Monday morning.
According to police sources, the man of unknown age was discovered just after 6 a.m. on April 6 inside the Wald Houses complex at 920 East 6th St. in the East Village.
Officers from the 9th Precinct and NYPD Public Service Area 4 located the man at the bottom of the building’s stairwell. He was unconscious and unresponsive and had bruises all over his body.
EMS rushed him to Bellevue Hospital, where sources say he regained consciousness before going into cardiac arrest, from which he would not recover. Police said the man’s identity is pending.
While yet to be deemed a homicide, the death is being considered suspicious, according to sources familiar with the investigation.
The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner will determine the cause of death.
The investigation is ongoing, police said.
