YONKERS, Westchester County — An MTA bus driver was assaulted after a minor car accident in Yonkers on Saturday night.

It happened near Riverdale and Ellsworth avenues around 8:30 p.m. That is the border of New York City and Westchester County.

It is where Bee-Line buses make a U-turn to go back north and MTA buses make a U-turn to head back into the Bronx.

After the minor crash, both drivers got out of their vehicles. Police say the civilian driver attacked the bus driver and threw him to the ground.

The driver is still in the hospital on Tuesday as police continue to search for the suspect.

John Chiarello, President of TWU Local 100, said he believes the suspect should be charged with attempted murder when he is found.

The union says the bus driver was attacked from behind and was punched, body slammed and choked. They say he suffered two brain bleeds, a concussion and neck and back and shoulder injuries.

“You’re picking on basically defenseless people, what are you getting out of it, except you’re gonna get jail time, because we’re gonna make sure when you do get caught, we’re gonna prosecute you to the fullest extent,” Chiarello said.

NYC Transit President Demetrius Crichlow released a statement saying, “Transit employees are just trying to do their jobs getting millions of New Yorkers where they need to go. Assaults against them are unacceptable and when this perpetrator is caught, they must face consequences to the maximum extent of the law.”
