Six years since their last album, the once reigning kings of New York City rock and roll announced a new record, “Going Shopping.”
The album’s first single, the title track, is a breezy number, with frontman Julian Casablancas crooning luxuriously, assisted by a touch of Auto-Tune.
While The Strokes emerged out of Manhattan at the turn of the millennium, New York’s rock center of gravity has since shifted to Brooklyn, with Park Slope’s Geese sitting atop the city’s musical throne.
Geese has received ample comparisons to The Strokes, who had a similarly white-hot reception early on in their career. But there’s no competition; Gen Xer Casablancas is an avowed fan of his Gen Z counterparts, posting on Instagram that Geese’s album “Getting Killed” is “great” and “timeless.” No word on an intergenerational collaboration, but both bands play Coachella on April 11 and 18.
“Going Shopping” will be released June 26. The band recorded the album in Costa Rica, with Rick Rubin producing. In addition to Coachella, the Strokes perform this summer at Bonnaroo and Outside Lands.
