More than 250,000 people took part in the first weekend of early voting for general elections in New York state, according to state Board of Elections numbers.

As of Monday, 258,553 state residents voted early on Saturday and Sunday, with 79,409 on day one and 84,781 on day two.

More than 60% of those — 164,190 — came from New York City voters, who are deciding the next mayor there in a high-profile race watched nationally. About 94,363 came from voters in the other parts of the state.

In upstate’s more populous counties, 7,060 people have voted early in Erie County; 5,552 voted early in Monroe County; 3,712 voted early in Albany County and 3,197 voted early in Onondaga County.

Eligible voters in New York can participate in early voting through Sunday, Nov. 2. Election Day is Tuesday, Nov. 4. In 2023, the last off-year election, more than 231,000 people voted early during the entire window it was available.

Early voting first came into practice in New York in 2019.
