(WHTM) – A majority of New York residents support a millionaire’s tax on individuals earning more than $1 million a year, according to a new Emerson College Polling survey.

The poll of New York City residents found that 65% support the tax or a 2% increase in city income tax on those earning seven figures. Fifty-five percent of residents say raising taxes on the wealthy would help close the city’s budget gap, while 41% say the city should do a better job managing its spending.

Only 4% said they believe a 5% property tax increase would be the best option to close the budget gap.

City residents are also unsure, the poll found, of whether a corporate tax increase of 1-2% would cause companies to leave. Thirty percent of those surveyed said they believe it would lead to a loss in companies, while 27% were unsure, and 44% said they did not believe companies would leave.

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani also remains popular in the city after his first few months in office. Mamdani’s approval was 43% in the poll, with 30% neutral and 27% disapproving of his job performance.

Fifty-five percent of residents who voted in the 2025 election approve of Mamdani’s performance. The mayor’s childcare affordability plan is also popular, with 54% of residents approving.

Despite the approval of Mamdani, residents overwhelmingly believe the city is headed in the wrong direction. Fifty-nine percent said they believe New York City is on the wrong track, while 41% said it was headed in the right direction.
