Unsettled weather will continue as we close out the week Friday. A round of rain showers are in the forecast as a cold front swings through. 

Highs will be wide-ranging Friday, from warm near and south of the thruway to noticeably cooler across far northern New York.

The weather quiets down for Saturday and most of Sunday. Rain chances are likely to return next week with temperatures warming back up again.

1. New York state workforce overtime surged 23% in 2025, driven by DOCCS, prison strike, DiNapoli says

State workforce overtime costs increased by $1.6 billion in 2025, according to a report released by state Comptroller Tom DiNapoli.

2. Judge strikes down DEC regulation over definition of ‘freshwater wetland’

The now invalidated rule would have expanded the definition of a “freshwater wetland” and required state permits for certain activities on more public and privately-owned land.

3. Anthony, White returning to SU for sophomore seasons

Anthony played in 29 games for the Orange in 2025-26, averaging 8 points per game. However, he missed the final two games of the season because of injury.

4. Women-owned businesses uplift the economy, and each other

In the village of Marcellus, you’ll find lots of small businesses to try out. From pizza shops to clothing stores to bookshops, the village’s economy is fueled by these local businesses. However, the lesser known truth is that all of these businesses, and many others, are run by women. 

5. Cryptocurrency scams involving hackers using stolen social media accounts on the rise

Countney Werning, an investor fraud attorney and principal at Meyer Wilson Werning, has seen her share of crypto scams and has helped victims of fraud recover millions of dollars. She says one of the latest scams happening worldwide is social media crypto marketing scams.

6. Newly created Polymarket accounts bet big on U.S.-Iran ceasefire in hours before Trump’s announcement

An analysis of publicly available blockchain data from Polymarket, using the crypto analytics platform Dune, shows that at least 50 accounts, or wallets, placed substantial “Yes” bets Tuesday before Trump announced the ceasefire in a Truth Social post at around 6:30 pm ET. These were the first bets made by these particular wallets.
