An urgent manhunt is underway in Jamaica where a gunman fatally shot a man near Archie Spigner Park on Friday afternoon.
Police from the 113th Precinct in Jamaica responded to a 911 call of a man shot in the vicinity of Merrick Boulevard and Sayer Avenue at around 2:20 p.m.
Upon arrival, officers found a 49-year-old victim, who sustained multiple gunshots to his torso. EMS responded to the scene and rushed him to Jamaica Hospital Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.
Hours later the NYPD identified the deceased as Richard Carter, 49, of South Cottage St. in Valley Stream, who was attending a funeral at the Greater Allen A.M.E. Cathedral of New York across from Archie Spigner Park at 110-31 Merrick Boulevard. Homicide detectives are working to determine a motive behind the fatal shooting and whether the victim was targeted or was an innocent bystander.
A law enforcement source familiar with the investigation said the gunman was last seen riding a Citi Bike northbound on 170th Street toward 111th Avenue wearing a DKNY jacket over a multi-colored sweatshirt and orange sneakers. There have been no arrests, an NYPD spokeswoman said.
