The New York State Department of Motor Vehicles is sounding the alarm on Monday over what it calls a growing crisis over the use of counterfeit IDs.

More than 340 counterfeit IDs have been seized at concert venues across the state in 2025 as part of the DMV’s annual “Operation Prevent” crackdown.

Officials say most offenders were caught trying to buy alcohol with the IDs at concerts over the summer. The crackdown aims to prevent the use of fake IDs while also discouraging underage drinking and driving.

The DMV warns that buying fake IDs online is not only a crime, but it can expose personal data to criminals, leading to identity theft and lasting consequences.

“Young people should think carefully about sending their most sensitive, personal information online to someone who has already proven they are willing to break the law,” DMV Commissioner Mark J.F. Schroeder said.

“Buying a fake ID online is an invitation to have your identity stolen and to put your future in jeopardy.”
