Famously, Great Neck has been dancing for over a century.

Back in the 1920s, when F. Scott Fitzgerald lived here, our neighborhood became the inspiration for West Egg in “The Great Gatsby.” The lavish parties he described—filled with jazz music, flowing champagne, and crowded dance floors—weren’t pure fiction. They reflected a real era, the Roaring Twenties, when dancing was at the center of social life, and Great Neck was part of that rhythm.

While many of us dance less and scroll more, these days, we remain curious.

Today, Dancing with the Stars has captured our attention, where regular folk (ok, celebrities) pair up with professional dancers and robustly compete in hard won dance- offs. It’s so glamorous and emotional, and fun! If only we had a local outlet to practice some of those awesome
moves…

Take a stroll down Middle Neck Road and you’ll hear the faint rhythm of a waltz or the lively beat of a cha-cha drifting through the air. Don’t be surprised—you’ve just discovered Great Neck Ballroom, the area’s newest hub for movement, music, and meaningful connection.

Step inside, and you’ll find a pulsing beat and a community ready to welcome you with open arms and one step at a time. At the heart of the studio is Sylvester, Alexandra and Simon, three lithe siblings who run the space, with aplomb. You’ll be charmed in no time.

How it started

The sibs’ story begins far from Long Island, in Poland, where dance wasn’t just a scheduled activity—it was a way of life. They began training at a very early age, immersing themselves in years of disciplined practice, competitions, and performances.

What started as a childhood passion gradually transformed into something deeper: a lifelong calling.

“Over time, we realized this wasn’t just something we just loved—it was something we wanted to dedicate our lives to,” Sylvester shared.

Before opening Great Neck Ballroom, the siblings spent 14 years teaching students of all ages and levels, refining their approach and helping others discover the transformative power of dance. With each lesson, they saw confidence grow, connections form, and joy take center stage.

Eventually, the idea for their own studio became impossible to ignore.

“We wanted to create more than just a place to learn steps,” Alexandra explained. “We wanted to build a community.” And that’s exactly what they’ve done. They have ballroom regulars -their very own Dirty Dancing posse, PG version.

A place for everyone

Great Neck Ballroom welcomes everyone—from beginners taking their very first steps to couples looking for a unique date night, to retirees and young professionals seeking a fun and social way to stay active. Ballroom dancing, often misunderstood as old-fashioned or overly formal, is anything but. Inside the studio, you’ll find an energetic mix of styles—waltz, tango, salsa, bachata, foxtrot, and more—each offering its own blend of elegance, technique, and fun.

“People think it’s difficult or intimidating,” Sylvester said with a smile. “But it’s actually one of the most accessible and enjoyable ways to connect—with music, with others, and with yourself.”

Ask Alexandra about the most rewarding moments, and she doesn’t hesitate.

“It’s seeing someone walk in thinking they have ‘two left feet’—and then watching them transform into a confident dancer,” she said.

“Sometimes even competing. That’s incredible. And for anyone still hesitating at the edge of the dance floor? “Don’t worry about being perfect,” they said. “Ballroom dancing is about having fun, connecting, and expressing yourself. Everyone starts as a beginner—and you might be surprised how quickly you fall in love with it.”

Dance like no one is watching (They’re scrolling on their phones)

The choice of Great Neck as a home base was no accident. Drawn by the area’s vibrant, welcoming atmosphere and appreciation for arts and culture, the trio saw an opportunity to create something special.

“We saw that adults and couples in the area didn’t have many local options for ballroom and Latin dance,” he noted. “We wanted to change that—to give people a place close to home, on “Main Street” where they can learn something new, socialize, and have fun.”

Great Neck Ballroom is a great addition to the retail mix in town. The Middle Neck Road location, in the heart of Great Neck Plaza with nearby parking, is an ideal spot for the studio. Plus, you can pick up a drink, snack, or meal at a nearby eatery either before or after a class.

Cha- cha- Ching

Two years in, the studio has already become a local favorite, thanks in large part to word-of- mouth and a supportive community. Still, the journey hasn’t been without its challenges. Like many small businesses, the early days required patience—building awareness, attracting
students, and maintaining steady momentum.

“The first months were the hardest,” Sylvester admitted. “But once we started to build a loyal group of regular students, everything changed.”
What’s kept them going is simple: consistency, passion, and a genuine commitment to each person who walks through the door.

Ballroom dancing: The most fun you can have standing up

Did you know ballroom dancing is one of those rare activities that checks every box—fitness,
social life, mental sharpness, and even emotional well-being. It’s not just a hobby; it’s a full
mind-body experience.

Ballroom dancing improves brain health and memory (slow, slow, quick, quick, slow) and focus and coordination. Your brain is constantly making new connections. Ballroom Dancing is great for relationships. I can attest personally — couples dancing is a terrific idea for a date night.

My dance moves are best described as ‘confidently incorrect’. Pro tip: Laughing burns calories, too. Undeniably, dancing reduces stress, improves mood and can be a vast departure from the daily routine.

Looking ahead, the vision for Great Neck Ballroom extends beyond classes. Plans are already in motion for community dance nights, performances, and special events designed to bring people together both on and off the dance floor. Sylvester also hopes to see downtown Great Neck continue to evolve into a lively center for arts and culture, with music and dance at the forefront.

So, Great Neck, bust a move.
