Hamden’s Jonathan Quick, who has played in more than 800 games during a 19-year NHL career, is hanging up his skates.

The New York Rangers’ goalie announced that his start against the Florida Panthers on Monday will be the final game of his NHL career. The game begins at 7 p.m.  at Amerant Bank Arena in Sunrise, Florida.

Quick, 40, played two seasons at Hamden High School and then at Avon Old Farms and UMass before being selected by the Los Angeles Kings in the third round, 72nd overall, in the 2005 NHL Draft.

Quick ends his career ranking 12th in all-time goalie wins with 410, and eight of the 11 players ranked above him have all been inducted into the Hall of Fame. Two are still active. Quick also had 65 career shutouts while playing in 829 games, with a 2.51 goals against average and .910 save percentage.

Quick was with the Los Angeles Kings for 16 seasons, winning the Stanley Cup in 2012 and 2014. He earned the league’s Conn Smythe Trophy as the NHL’s MVP during the Kings’ drive to the Stanley Cup championship in 2014. He joined Cheshire’s Brian Leetch as Connecticut natives to earn the Smythe Trophy.

Quick returned home to Hamden in 2014 with the Stanley Cup.

In March, 2023, he was traded to the Las Vegas Golden Knights, and helped them win the Stanley Cup championship. He then joined the Rangers the following year.
