The New York State Police have announced the passing of a 65-year-old member with over 20 years of service.
New York State Police Superintendent Steven G. James has confirmed that 65-year-old retired Zone Sergeant Steven W. Greene has passed away.

James made the announcement through a press release on Friday, October 24th, 2025, stating,
“It is with deep sadness that Superintendent Steven G. James announces the line-of-duty death of retired Zone Sergeant Steven W. Greene at the age of 65.”

Sergeant Greene, who retired from the New York State Police (NYSP) on July 17, 2002, with over 20 years of dedicated service, passed away on Friday, October 24th, 2025, from an illness stemming from his assignment in and around the World Trade Center site following the terrorist attack on September 11, 2001.

Funeral arrangements will be announced at a later date, according to the press release. Zone Sergeant Greene is survived by his wife, Nancy, and his sons, Robert and Daniel.

The line of duty passing of Zone Sergeant Steven Greene is the fifth of its kind this year. Sergeant Greene is the fourth NYSP member to pass away due to an illness resulting from his time at the World Trade Center site after the 9/11 attacks.
Earlier this month, we learned that retired that 56-year-old retired Trooper Mark A. Ondus had passed away. Trooper Ondus, who served 26 years with the NYSP, passed away on Thursday, October 9, 2025.
Our thoughts and prayers are with the families, colleagues, and friends of each of the dedicated men mentioned above.
