Retired New York State Police Sgt. Steven Greene died Friday at the age of 65. Greene last served the New York State Police Troop B in Canton before his retirement. According to New York State Police Superintendent Steven James, Greene died from an illness related to his assignment at the World Trade Center in the aftermath of the Sept. 11 terror attacks. Greene spent 20 years with the New York State Police. He retired in 2002. He is survived by his wife and his two sons. Funeral arrangements will be announced at a later date.There have been several deaths from Troop B within the last decade, attributed to illnesses that stemmed from the response at the World Trade Center in 2001. In 2017, Trooper Brian Falb died from brain cancer. In 2023, Capt. Christopher Garrow also died from cancer believed to be related to his search and recovery efforts in the aftermath of Sept. 11.
