Queen Sofia of Spain and Princess Muna Al Hussein of Jordan both attended the 37th Global Conference of Alzheimer’s Disease International (ADI) in Lyon, France this week.

Queen Sofia has been a global ambassador for ADI since 2018, and Princess Muna has been one since 2023. In her welcoming letter to the conference, Queen Sofia wrote, “this year has brought together an unprecedented number of delegates from around the world, all united by the same conviction and dedication to research, care, and advocacy for people living with dementia and those who care for them.”

Sofia, the mother of King Felipe VI, and Muna, the mother of King Abdullah, are longtime friends. They last attended the 36th Global Conference of ADI held in Krakow, Poland last April, together. The Spanish queen emeritus also attended Muna’s grandson Crown Prince Al Hussein Bin Abdullah’s wedding to Rajwa al Saif in June 2023.

Another royal, Queen Silvia, also works with ADI as a global ambassador. Though she did not attend the conference in Lyon, she wrote to participants, “My commitment to this cause is both personal and stems from a broader conviction: to improve the lives of people affected by Alzheimer’s disease. Having witnessed the impact of dementia on my own family—my mother and my brother—I know how truly valuable your work is… Although I regret not being able to join you in person, you know you have my full support. Thank you for your dedication and tireless commitment. Together, we are building a more hopeful future for people with Alzheimer’s and their loved ones.”
