NASSAU COUNTY, Long Island (WABC) — A 15-year-old was killed and two other people were injured when shots rang out at Eisenhower Park in East Meadow.
Police are investigating the shooting as gang-related.
Authorities say there was an event linked to the Bloods gang, with invitations sent out over social media.
Police were called just before 8:30 p.m. Wednesday after reports of multiple people shot at the park.
A 15-year-old boy died. The two other victims are in stable condition and undergoing surgery Thursday morning.
Two people were allegedly found with weapons and arrested.
Authorities say an argument started between two people at a barbecue.
The park was technically closed at the time, and workers were in the process of clearing the area and locking the gates.
An ambulance medic who was already in the park heard the first gunshots and ran toward the scene.
Officials say they will not tolerate any gang activity in Nassau County.
Police say people from the Bronx and Suffolk County were attending the gathering.
One mother spoke with Eyewitness News Wednesday night. She said her 17-year-old son called her, telling her his 15-year-old friend had been shot.
“He just said, ‘My friend just got shot, my friend got shot,’ and we were like, ‘What happened?’ And he was like, ‘I don’t know.’ My stomach is sunken, and I don’t know what’s going on. It’s pretty surreal, because you wouldn’t think it would be your own child,” she said.
Police have not said what the argument was about or exactly why the shooting happened.
The investigation is ongoing.
