NEW YORK (WBNG) — Applications for the New York State Cooling Assistance Benefit program are now open.
The program helps income-eligible households buy and install air conditioners or fans to help cool their homes during the warm summer months.
Cooling assistance funds are limited and distributed on a first-come, first-served basis.
Eligibility criteria include, but is not limited to:
Your Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits, Temporary Assistance (TA), or Code A Supplemental Security Income (SSI Living Alone)Your household contains at least one individual with a documented medical condition that is exacerbated by extreme heatYour household contains a vulnerable member based on their age (60 years or older, or under age 6) who meets all other component eligibility criteriaYou currently do not have a working air conditioner or the air conditioner you have is five years old or older, andYou did not receive a HEAP-funded air conditioner within the past five years.
