New York City Department of Transportation (NYC DOT) Commissioner Ydanis Rodriguez has announced the completion of construction works on eight miles of new and improved bus lanes on Hillside Avenue in Queens.

The bus lanes are expected to deliver faster, more reliable service and shorter commutes for its 215,000 daily riders along 22 bus routes on the corridor.

Completion of the project signals the end of one of the agency’s longest bus priority projects in its history, extending offset bus lanes from 139th Street to Springfield Boulevard.

NYC DOT Commissioner Ydanis Rodriguez said:

NYC DOT is changing the game, one bus lane at a time—and this redesign of Hillside Avenue brings consistent, camera-enforced bus lanes across the corridor while freeing up curb space to support local shops with their deliveries and customer access.

We thank Mayor Adams and the MTA for their support in improving this critical transit corridor for everyone who uses it.

The Hillside Avenue bus priority project aims to improve service for all riders along 22 Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) bus routes, as well as improve connections to four nearby subway lines, the Long Island Rail Road and the JFK AirTrain.

Prior to the implementation of the new bus lanes; specific sections of Hillside Avenue utilised curbside bus lanes, which operated during rush hours. These lanes were first introduced in 1969, with this new project representing their first major upgrade in over 50 years.

The new lane design features a parking lane on each side of the street, as well as one travel lane for vehicle traffic, one for left turning vehicles and one for bus traffic in each direction. New offset bus lanes are in effect 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and are enforced via the MTA’s Automated Camera Enforcement (ACE) system.

Now, the eastbound bus lane runs from 144th Street to Springfield Boulevard; with the westbound bus lane running from 139th Street to Springfield Boulevard.

The redesign has also added over 600 parking and loading spaces to support both customer and delivery access to local businesses.
