New York advocates and lawmakers took over the Million Dollar Staircase in the state Capitol on Monday to call for changes to the state’s sentencing laws, including the Second Look Act, the Earned Time Act and the Marvin Mayfield Act.
The Second Look Act would allow judges to review and reconsider sentences to allow incarcerated people to demonstrate that they have changed or have “unjust” sentences reconsidered.
The Earned Time Act would expand “good” or “merit time” programs in prisons to help rehabilitate people before the end of their sentence.Â
Finally, the Marvin Mayfield Act would eliminate mandatory minimum sentences in New York.Â
Thomas Gant, a formerly incarcerated person who currently serves as a community organizer at the Center for Community Alternatives, joined Capital Tonight on Monday to discuss the package of legislation.
