1. Former correction officer rejects plea in Mid-State prison death
The frequency of severe weather events in New York state is growing, meaning disaster response costs have risen over the last three decades or so, according to a new report released Tuesday by state Comptroller Tom DiNapoli’s office.
3. Super Bowl-winning coach Coughlin part of local Hall of Fame class
The 2025 class of seven includes All-American lacrosse player Brittany Brigandi from CBA and Le Moyne; former NFL player and Auburn native Buddy Hardeman; and former New York Giants Super Bowl-winning coach Tom Coughlin, a Waterloo native who played for and coached with legendary SU football coach Ben Schwartzwalder in the 1960s before embarking on a coaching career that took him to Boston College and the NFL, with the Jacksonville Jaguars and the Giants.
4. Colgate expands waiver of tuition fees
The private university will be waiving tuition fees starting next fall for all students whose families earn less than $175,000 under its “Colgate Commitment” program.
5. Vernon Center fire chief criticizes sentence given to former treasurer
A man tasked with managing the Vernon Center Fire Department’s finances was sentenced Tuesday for stealing more than $300,000 from the volunteer force. Oneida County Court Judge Michael Nolan sentenced Jonnell Rose, former treasurer of the Vernon Center Fire Department, to one to three years in prison for stealing $309,000 from the department between May 2018 and May 2024. Rose had previously pleaded guilty to second-degree grand larceny in the case.
