The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) has introduced a set of new bus operator training simulators designed to update how drivers are prepared for service across New York City.
The equipment has been installed at two locations operated by New York City Transit, with three simulators at the Zerega Training Center in the Bronx and one at the Spring Creek Depot in Brooklyn. The systems are already in use.

The simulators are intended to provide a more realistic training environment and to support both new recruits and experienced operators. The cabins replicate the layouts of several types of buses, including diesel, hybrid, electric and articulated vehicles, allowing trainees to practise using controls similar to those found in service.
MTA Chair and CEO Janno Lieber said:
We’re already seeing the benefits of these cutting-edge simulators as part of our commitment to delivering top-tier service. These simulators help bus operators quickly build the skills and confidence to navigate NYC streets – safely and speedily – even before they hit the road.
The systems include 4K visual displays that simulate road conditions, traffic patterns and weather. Instructors can programme specific scenarios, including incidents and difficult driving conditions, and monitor trainee performance through built-in data tools.
The MTA estimates that more than 4,300 bus operators will train on the simulators each year across the two facilities. The programme is expected to support faster training while maintaining safety standards.
NYC Transit President Demetrius Crichlow said:
With modern bus simulators, we’re ensuring bus operators are set up for success to deliver safe and reliable service for riders. These simulators deliver immersive, real world environments across different bus types and scenarios that benefit both new and experienced employees.
