Across the borough this week, Earth Day celebrations will transform neighborhoods into hubs of sustainability, education and community action. From waterfront programming to storytime for the youngest environmentalists, Brooklyn’s Earth Day events reflect both the urgency of climate awareness and the creativity of the communities embracing it.

Here’s where to get your green thumb on this Earth Day.

Earth Day Storytime at BPL

April 22, 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., 581 Mother Gaston Blvd. in Brownsville

Children from birth to five years and their participating caregivers can “enjoy stories, songs and rhymes” at Stone Avenue Library in Brownsville. The storytime is aimed at teaching Brooklyn youth about climate and the environment, with playtime in between.

Earth Day Bike Tour, Shirley Chisholm State Park

April 22, 4 p.m. to 5 p.m., Shirley Chisholm State Park in East New York/Canarsie

This free bike tour in East New York will educate riders on the history and ecology of the park’s Fountain side. Riders can borrow a bike from the park’s bike library or bring their own. Organizers remind interested riders that the tour includes “moderate inclines on gravel trails, as well as some paved trails.”

Programming at Brooklyn Bridge Park

April 25, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., Brooklyn Bridge Park, 334 Furman St. on the waterfront

Brooklyn Bridge Park has a full slate of programming planned on April 25. Events include intro to birds/birding, walking with an arborist, Tree ID 101, plant walks, insect hunting and the chance to volunteer with the park’s Green Team. The park will accept donations for local nonprofits like Brooklyn Book Bodega, Little Essentials and Green Tree Textile. No RSVP is needed, and the event is subject to change due to weather.

Earth Day Clothing Swap

April 25, 12 p.m., McCarren Park, 776 Lorimer St. in Williamsburg

Jem Hunts, a sustainable second-hand clothing company, will host a clothing swap at McCarren Park on April 25. The event is aimed at “creating space to refresh wardrobes sustainably, connect with each other and give great pieces a second life.” All clothing swaps are free, and leftover clothing will be donated to charity. Exact location will be giben out on the day of the event.

Car-Free Earth Day

April 25, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., various locations including Borough Park

This car-free event is hosted annually by the NYC Department of Transportation and features “free activities and programming focused on climate change, sustainability” across the city. In Brooklyn, Borough Park’s Fifth Avenue from 41st to 45th Streets will feature free family programming throughout the day. Activities include sports, performances and more.
