A woman was killed and a man was hospitalized with injuries after a car jumped a curb in the Bronx and plowed into the bench the two were sitting on, according to police.
A 55-year-old man was driving north on Bartow Avenue in Co-op City just after 1:30 p.m. Tuesday when he had a medical episode behind the wheel, police said. The vehicle, a 2018 Mazda CX5, jumped the curb and struck two people who were sitting on a bench near Co-op City Boulevard.
The 72-year-old woman who was struck suffered injuries to her head and body, police said. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
The 36-year-old man sitting on the bench alongside her was conscious and alert after the incident. He was taken to Jacobi Hospital, and is expected to recover.
It was not immediately clear what condition the driver behind the wheel of the vehicle was in, though he was taken to the hospital as well.
