Affordable housing projects in New York City often face significant hurdles before construction can begin, including resistance at community meetings.

Concerns from residents can slow or even derail proposals, even when developments aim to address housing shortages.

At a recent meeting on the proposed Sunnyside Yard project in Queens, residents raised questions about how units would be allocated, including housing for seniors, low-income residents and people with disabilities.

Stacy Bliagos, executive director of HANAC, a nonprofit that builds affordable housing and provides social services, joined “Mornings On 1” to discuss the challenges of advancing these projects.
