On Tuesday night, a few New Yorkers in Milan for the annual furniture fair known as Salone del Mobile gathered for dinner at the invitation of New York Magazine and Bottega Veneta.
The Salone, a trade show where furniture and home-décor brands introduce new collections every April, is the anchor of Milan Design Week, which sees tens of thousands of visitors pour into the city for a marathon of satellite fairs, museum exhibitions, and showroom visits. There’s often a lot of talk of chairs over espresso. For its part, Bottega collaborated with the Korean artist Kwangho Lee on a series of ten lamps in its signature intrecciato weave, which were displayed as a large-scale installation at the label’s Sant’Andrea flagship store. Lee, Bottega creative director Louise Trotter, the artist and designer Conie Vallese, and the artistic directors Dan Buchanan and Dan Thawley were among the guests at the dinner at Antica Trattoria della Pesa, which was co-hosted by New York design editor Wendy Goodman and editor-at-large Erik Maza.
The trattoria is one of the oldest in the city and specializes in northern Italian cuisine: Vitello tonnato was followed by risotto alla Milanese and beef fillet. Derek Blasberg, the artist Chris Wolston, and the designers Gabriel Hendifar of Apparatus and Adam Charlap Hyman and Andre Herrero of Charlap Hyman & Herrero were among those at the restaurant, alongside New York expats who’ve relocated to Milan — the designers Gabriella Campagna and Maria Milana of Casa Milana, the gallerist Sofia Zevi, and Jenny Pham, the co-founder of the brands Cromo and Objects Are By.
Each guest received a glass from Laguna~B, whose colorful goti de fornasa are collectible design items. Murano glassblowers invented the goti centuries ago as water cups to keep cool while working with 1,500-degree furnaces. “Honor their memory when you fill yours to the brim, whether with water or wine,” the hosts instructed in a card. “We leave that to your discretion.”
