ARVERNE, Queens (PIX11) — Plans are underway for a residential building that will contain affordable housing in the Rockaways, Gov. Kathy Hochul announced on Friday.
The $278 million project is being built on vacant land that was affected by Superstorm Sandy.

Known as Averne East Building D, the building will contain 230 affordable rental units and 90 affordable co-op units.
Multiple indoor and outdoor amenities, including outdoor terraces, a lounge, a playroom, and a gym, among others, will be available at the apartment building.
Building D is the first phase of a 166-acre complex that will contain a total of 1,650 apartments and townhomes, 80% of which will be set aside for affordable housing.
“The latest phase of Arverne East will give more New Yorkers the opportunity to own affordable, sustainable and resilient homes,” Hochul said.
Building D will be a mix of one-, two-, and three-bedroom apartments. A section of the building will be affordable co-op units for households earning up to 100 % of the area median income.
The apartment building is expected to be environmentally friendly with solar panels and will have geothermal heating and cooling for the facility.

Considering the building is located in the Rockaways, it will also be resilient to flooding. The residential facilities will be above the first floor in the event of a major storm that could bring flooding to the area.
The apartment complex is expected to be completed in 2028
