Amtrak service to Boston suspended after structural issue on Rhode Island on-ramp

BIG IMPACTS HERE FOR ANYONE TRYING TO GET TO NEW YORK THIS MORNING. BECAUSE CURRENTLY EVERY AMTRAK TRAIN FROM BOSTON TO NEW YORK IS CANCELED UNTIL AT LEAST 940. NOW, THE REASON BEING IS WHAT HAPPENED LAST NIGHT DOWN IN CRANSTON, RHODE ISLAND, AROUND 730 FRIDAY NIGHT, RHODE ISLAND OFFICIALS SAY A PIECE OF HIGHWAY ON RAMP FROM ROUTE TEN TO I-95 DETACHED AND LANDED ON THE RAILROAD TRACKS. NOT ONLY ARE CREWS HAVING TO CLEAN UP THE DEBRIS, THEY HAVE TO REPAIR THE INFRASTRUCTURE THAT’S BEEN DAMAGED, INCLUDING THE BARRIER FOR THE ELECTRIFICATION OF THE AMTRAK LINE. IT’S HAVING HUGE IMPACTS HERE FOR TRAVELERS TRYING TO GET TO NEW. WE’RE TRYING TO HEAD TO NEW YORK WITH THE REST OF OUR FAMILY JUST FOR LIKE A LITTLE FAMILY TRIP. AND WE’RE TRYING TO MAKE IT THERE AT LIKE 2:00. AND SO WE WENT TO SLEEP KIND OF LATE, JUST LIKE HAVING FUN. AND THEN WE, SOMEONE LUCKILY WOKE UP AT LIKE 115 BECAUSE THEY COULDN’T SLEEP WHEN THEY GOT A TEXT. AND WE WERE LIKE, WOW, OUR TRAIN’S CANCELED. NOW, THE SITUATION ENDED UP BEING A REAL DISASTER LAST NIGHT AS TRAINS WERE CANCELED ACROSS THE NORTHEAST REGIONAL, INCLUDING AN ACELA TRAIN THAT HAD TO BE TURNED AROUND AND SENT BACK TO NEW YORK. SO HERE’S WHERE WE STAND RIGHT NOW. WE REACHED OUT TO AMTRAK TO GET AN UPDATE ABOUT WHEN SERVICE IS GOING TO RETURN. WE HAVE YET TO HEAR BACK AS FAR AS THE CUSTOMERS HERE IN SOUTH STATION, MANY PEOPLE HAVE BEEN GOING THROUGH THEIR PHONES, GOING TO THE AMTRAK TICKET COUNTER OVER THERE, TRYING TO BOOK WHATEVER TICKETS ARE AVAILABLE. I WILL WARN YOU, THEY ARE SKYROCKETING IN PRICE. A LOT OF PEOPLE ALSO HEADING OVER THERE TO TRY TO BOOK A GREYHOUND BUS OR PETER PAN BUS. All Amtrak trains between Boston and New York City were canceled through early Saturday morning after a structural issue in Cranston, Rhode Island.Highway officials said a piece of the on-ramp to Interstate 95 detached and fell on railroad tracks below around 7:30 p.m. Friday. The debris included a large piece of the parapet, which is the metal barrier on the edge of the road.Rhode Island Department of Transportation officials say the on-ramp was due to be inspected six days after the incident. It is scheduled to be demolished and replaced.Sections of the electrification barrier for the Amtrak line were damaged in the collapse. Passengers were notified by text after at least 18 trains were either canceled or sent back to New York before reaching Boston.Officials have not given an estimate for how long repairs will take or when trains could resume service. The earliest train that has not been canceled is tentatively set to depart Boston’s South Station at 9:59 a.m. Saturday.Newscenter 5 has reached out to Amtrak for comment, but we have not heard back.
