Manhattan High track and field continued its strong spring stretch Friday, as the Indians’ girls captured the team title and the boys placed third at Free State’s Leitel Legacy Invitational in Lawrence.

Manhattan’s girls ran away with the meet, scoring 125.5 points to finish well ahead of the host Lawrence Free State (83) and Piper (78.5). On the boys’ side, the Indians were right in the mix in a tight race at the top, finishing third with 74 points — just one point behind co-champions Piper and Olathe West (75).

The girls once again leaned on their distance group, which set the tone throughout the meet.

Gabrielle Converse led the way with a win in the 3200 meters in 10:59.82, while Isla Spreer followed with a runner-up finish in 11:24.18. Zara Koehn added a second-place finish in the 1600 (5:14.60), with Allison Knopp placing sixth.

The Indians also picked up a win in the 4×800 relay, as the quartet of Lauren Perry, Knopp, Talia Tindall and Koehn finished in 9:36.54.

Manhattan’s sprint group added key points, led by Demya Gill and Michelle Jeje. Gill placed second in the 100 meters (12.42), while Jeje followed in fourth. In the 200, Jeje placed fourth and Gill fifth, while the 4×100 relay team of Addison Hanschu, Gill, Sophie Stanley and Jeje took second in 49.91.

In the field events, Jorryn Hall continued her strong season with a win in the shot put (39-10) while also placing third in the javelin and fifth in the discus. The Peabody sisters added another highlight in the high jump, with Sophia Peabody winning the event at 5-2 and Alexis Peabody placing fourth at the same height.

On the boys’ side, Manhattan remained within striking distance of the top spot throughout the meet, fueled by strong performances in both the sprints and field events.

The Indians’ 4×100 relay team of Caleb Brumbaugh, Leopold Kane, Damien Gonzales and Joseph Mortensen claimed the title in 42.33, while Gonzales added an individual win in the 200 meters (22.20). Kane placed sixth in the event, and Mortensen added a third-place finish in the 100 meters (10.93).

In the distance events, Wilson Wesch delivered one of the top performances of the meet, placing third in the 800 meters with a time of 1:54.38 — a new school record. He also added a ninth-place finish in the 1600 to lead Manhattan in the race.

Manhattan’s field events played a major role in the team scoring. Evan Middleton continued his standout senior season with a win in the shot put (59-8), a mark that ranks No. 3 in Kansas this season and No. 74 nationally in the current US High School Outdoor rankings.

The Indians also saw strong results in the jumps, as Brady Durtschi won the triple jump (45-0) and Derrick Amos placed third. Brumbaugh added a runner-up finish in the long jump, while Lucas Strawn placed fourth in the pole vault.

Manhattan will be back in action next week at the Seaman Relays on Friday.
