STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Staten Island residents will have another opportunity to safely dispose of sensitive documents at a free shredding event this Saturday, Oct. 11, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in West Brighton.
District Attorney Michael E. McMahon, state Sen. Jessica Scarcella-Spanton, the Staten Island Zoo and Aurora Computer Technology are organizing the event to help protect residents from identity theft and financial fraud.
The event will take place at the Staten Island Zoo parking lot on Martling Avenue.
Attendees may choose to bring bank and credit card statements, expired identification and credit cards, medical documents, old tax returns — anything with your name, address, birthday, bank information, Social Security number, or other sensitive information that can be used to steal your identity.
Attendees can also safely dispose of personal electronic devices such as cellphones, tablets, laptops, hard drives, memory cards, CDs and DVDs.
For many Staten Islanders, identity theft remains one of the most common threats impacting our neighbors and loved ones.
While scammers are savvy, one way to help protect yourself and your sensitive information is to properly dispose of your personal documents and old or unwanted electronic devices in a safe and secure manner.
This event is free and open to the public. All Staten Islanders are encouraged to attend and do their part to protect themselves, their identity, and their personal finances.
