Olivia Rodrigo surprised a New York City crowd over the weekend!
The Grammy winner delivered a surprise performance of her new single “Drop Dead” for an unsuspecting audience during an open mic night at Pete’s Candy Store in N.Y.C. on Sunday, April 26.
Known for showcasing emerging talent, Pete’s Candy Store hosted an open mic on April 26 — and one of the fellow performers didn’t even know Rodrigo would make an appearance.
A musician who goes by Industry Monk performed at the open mic and shared a video to Instagram, noting that he was “unaware I was opening for Olivia Rodrigo at Pete’s Candy Store today.”
Rodrigo then took the stage to sing “Drop Dead” in a casual outfit alongside an acoustic guitarist.
“Drop Dead” was released with a music video filmed at the Palace of Versailles on April 17 as the lead single off Rodrigo’s upcoming third studio album, You Seem Pretty Sad for a Girl So in Love.
In a recent interview with British Vogue, Rodrigo spoke about facing “a creative challenge to write from a joyful place” for the new album.
“When you’re experiencing that you’re connected to someone, or feeling really good, you’re not in your head thinking about bittersweet poems!” said Rodrigo. The star was previously linked to British actor Louis Partridge and recently spotted out to dinner with Cameron Winter of the band Geese.
Rodrigo said the album will include “sad love songs” and explained, “I realized all my favorite romantic love songs were beautiful because they had a tinge of fear or yearning in them.”
Earlier this month, she delivered the first live performance of “Drop Dead” with Addison Rae during the “Diet Pepsi” singer’s Coachella set.
You Seem Pretty Sad for a Girl So in Love is set for a June 12 release via Geffen Records.
