Manhattan High softball split its road doubleheader at Trinity Academy on Monday, falling 4-1 in the opener before responding with a 6-3 win in Game 2.
The Indians struggled to generate offense early, managing just two hits in the first game.
Trinity took control in the opening inning, using a solo home run and a two-run single to jump out to a 3-0 lead.
Manhattan’s lone run came off the bat of Josi Alesana, who drove in the Indians’ only score. Alesana and Aslyn Foveaux accounted for the team’s two hits.
Despite the loss, Manhattan was clean defensively, turning a double play and committing no errors. In the circle, Allison Heidrick went six innings, allowing four runs on seven hits while striking out five and walking three.
Manhattan bounced back in the nightcap behind early offense and a strong outing from Alesana.
The Indians struck first in the opening inning, as Alesana launched a two-run home run to right field to give Manhattan an early lead.
Kat Ball followed with a solo home run in the second, extending the advantage, before Manhattan added two more runs in the third on an RBI single from Alesana and a sacrifice situation that allowed Neitzel to score.
Alesana led the way offensively, going 2-for-4 with three RBIs, while the Indians totaled seven hits. In the circle, the sophomore went the distance, allowing three runs on eight hits while striking out seven and walking three.
Trinity threatened late, but Manhattan held on to secure the split.
The Indians return to action Wednesday at Seaman.
