King Carl XVI Gustaf celebrated his 80th birthday with a gala dinner featuring royals from around the world
An epic group photo captured the dozens of royal guests in attendance
Crown Princess Victoria honored her father’s lifelong dedication to the Swedish crown in a heartfelt speech at the banquet
King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden’s 80th birthday came with an ultimate group picture of the royal guests in attendance.
The King of Sweden celebrated his milestone birthday on Wednesday, April 30, and a highlight of the full day of festivities was the gala dinner at the Royal Palace, attended by royalty from around the world.
The group posed for a portrait at the evening bash, capturing the rare moment that united members from multiple royal houses.
“H.M. The King surrounded by the Royal Family, the Nordic heads of state and other guests of honour during the King’s 80th birthday party at the Royal Palace this evening,” courtiers captioned the snap on Instagram.
King Carl XVI Gustaf and his wife, Queen Silvia, sat front and center in the portrait, where she shimmered in the Brazilian Tiara. To their right was King Frederik and Queen Mary of Denmark, Queen Margrethe of Denmark (who abdicated in 2024), Queen Sofia of Spain (mother of the current monarch, King Felipe) and Princess Beatrix, the former Queen of the Netherlands.
Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden stood directly behind her parents, along with her 14-year-old daughter, Princess Estelle. Crown Princess Victoria, 49, is the heir to the Swedish throne and followed in the line of succession by her teenage daughter. To Victoria’s right was Crown Prince Haakon of Norway, Princess Christina of Sweden (King Carl XVI Gustaf’s sister), President of Finland Alexander Stubb, President of Iceland Halla Tómasdóttir of Iceland, Finnish President Alexander Stubb, Duke Franz of Bavaria and other guests of honor.
King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia’s youngest daughter, Princess Madeleine, and her husband, Christopher O’Neill, took spots in the back row of the portrait. The couple stood next to Princess Sophie of Liechtenstein, her son Prince Joseph Wenzel, Prince Hubertus and Princess Kelly of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, and Thomas Greinwald, the Duke of Bavaria’s partner.

To the left of the Swedish King sat King Harald and Queen Sonja of Norway, King Philippe of Belgium and Queen Mathilde of Belgium, and King Rama and Queen Suthida of Thailand.
Crown Princess Victoria’s husband, Prince Daniel, stood in the row behind, alongside Princess Benedikte of Denmark, Grand Duke Guillaume and Grand Duchess Stéphanie of Luxembourg, Grand Duke Henri of Luxembourg (who abdicated in October 2025), Custodian of the Romanian Crown Margareta and her husband, Prince Radu, and Crown Prince Alexander and Princess Katherine of Serbia.
The back row closed out with King Carl XVI and Queen Sonja’s son, Prince Carl Philip, and his wife, Princess Sofia, Prince Leopold and Princess Ursula of Bavaria and Prince Philip of Serbia and his wife, Princess Danica.

The Royal House of Sweden pulled out all the stops for King Carl XVI Gustaf’s birthday dinner, where the State Hall was decorated with all of Sweden’s provincial flags and the menu included dill-cooked lobster, Swedish veal loin and cooked rhubarb with lemon and elderberry mousse.
King Carl XVI Gustaf, Queen Silvia and Crown Princess Victoria all gave speeches through the evening, where the Crown Princess shouted out her father’s lifelong commitment to the crown.

“The most important thing you have conveyed to us – not so much in words as in action – is the respect and humility you have shown towards your mission. Serving Sweden has been, and is, not just your life’s work, but your calling,” Victoria said in part, per a statement translated into English.
“Together with Mom, you have shown me and my siblings, every day, what it means to honor your mission. I will do everything I can to pass that understanding on to the next generation. The next link in the chain.”
King Carl XVI Gustaf acceded to the throne at age 27 in 1973 and is currently in the 53rd year of his reign. He is the longest serving-sovereign in Sweden’s history and the world’s second-longest-serving current head of state, behind the Sultan of Brunei.
