CROTONA PARK EAST, The Bronx (PIX11) — A building that contains supportive housing in the Bronx was completed, Governor Kathy Hochul announced Tuesday.

Developed by Urban Pathways, the Fredrick Shack Residence contains 79 studio apartments in a seven-story building meant for individuals tackling homelessness. It provides safe and stable housing along with services that are designed to support long-term independence and well-being.

Located at 1405 Boston Rd., it was built on the site of a building that formerly contained 29 single-room occupancy units.

“The Frederick Shack Residence represents exactly the kind of investment we need to make so that New Yorkers have an affordable place to call home, and access to the services they need to be successful,” said Hochul.

Fifty-five units are reserved for eligible individuals who will receive on-site support services.

A recreation room, a common kitchen, and a landscaped backyard are also available for residents.

Named after Fredrick Shack, who previously served as the executive director of Urban Pathway and passed away earlier in April. He advocated for supportive housing and homelessness services as a member of the board of directors on the Supportive Housing Network of New York.

“This moment represents more than the opening of a building—it is a continuation of a vision rooted in dignity, compassion, and opportunity,” said Gary P. Jenkins, Chief Executive Officer of Urban Pathways. “As we honor Fred Shack’s extraordinary legacy, we reaffirm our commitment to ensuring that every New Yorker has access to safe, supportive housing and the services needed to thrive.”
