Former New York City mayor Rudy Giuliani has pneumonia and is still hospitalized in critical but stable condition, his spokesman said Monday, hours after news broke that the disbarred Republican had fallen ill.
Spokesman Ted Goodman said Giuliani is now breathing on his own, with his family at his side.
“Please keep the prayers coming,” Goodman said.
The health update comes hours after President Donald Trump posted a message on his social media platform acknowledging his one-time adviser had been hospitalized.
Giuliani, 81, who became mayor after serving as U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York, was lionized for his response to the September 11th terrorist attacks in Lower Manhattan. But he was disbarred in New York in 2024 after spreading lies surrounding Donald Trump and the 2020 election.
Giuliani served as mayor from 1994 through 2001.
Goodman issued a statement that says, in part, “On September 11th, Mayor Giuliani ran toward the towers to help those in need, which later led to a diagnosis of restrictive airway disease. This condition adds complications to any respiratory illness, and the virus quickly overwhelmed his body, requiring mechanical ventilation to maintain adequate oxygen and stabilize his condition.”
